Goldfields Piping Weekend 2019

Are you frustrated with your reeds? Do you want to know how to fettle? Are you keen to make your own?

This year at the Goldfields Piping Weekend we welcome not one but two experienced reed-makers - Craig Fischer (SA) and Pat Lyons (Vic) - to teach you everything there is to know about reeds and reed making. Of course, the usual tune workshops and sessions will be on offer too.

The weekend will include the usual highlights such as lots of social time and the Saturday evening Soiree. The program for the weekend will be specially designed for everyone; whether reeds are a mystery to you or you're a well-seasoned fettler, or if you want to focus on playing. Early booking is appreciated to help with the planning.

Guest Tutors

Craig Fischer
Craig studied engineering, computing and physics at Uni but setup a musical repair business in the Adelaide CBD in the early 80’s instead, working on strings and electronics mostly. Not long after that Craig got his first set of pipes, NSP, then an interesting old set of UP and had to learn reedmaking the hard way, there was no-one in Adelaide to learn from!

Craig started making some pipes and copies of Rudall-Rose type flutes and fell into the world of early woodwind, making his living from that and as a musician for many years. Craig has run many reedmaking and some instrument making classes. In the late 90’s NPU sponsored Craig to travel around Ireland measuring old instruments, also then gave a talk at their AGM about aspects of the C.19th makers and a reedmaking class at the NPU Tionól in Belfast. He was a founding member of the Sean Reid Society devoted to historical Irish pipes - SRS journal articles are all still hosted on the Internet.

Craig no longer makes instruments for a living and works for the local Dept of Ed. but still continues to evolve his ideas about pipe and reed making and teaches both occasionally. Craig has developed a structured approach to teaching how reeds work which aims to help people produce reliable and robust reeds.

Pat Lyons
Coming from an Irish family, with a grandmother from West Clare who played concertina, and learning Irish dancing from the age of six, it was inevitable that Pat would end up playing Irish traditional music.

Attracted to the sound of the uilleann pipes as a teenager, it was a chance meeting with the great pipe-maker Geoff Wooff that gave him the opportunity to own and play a set of uilleann pipes. Pat is also an accomplished reed-maker, something he says comes in handy for maintenance and tuning of his chosen instrument.

Program

Friday 16 August

Participants arrive between 4 pm and 8 pm. There is no meal supplied on the Friday night, but we will meet for a group meal at a local eater. This will be at your expense. Participants are also welcome to use the kitchen to prepare or heat food. Take-away and dining out meals are available locally.

Friday evening will be an opportunity for pipes maintenance (to make sure they’re in working order for the weekend!) and a night of social piping.

Saturday 17 August

There will be a full day of workshops between 9 am and 4 pm.

In the afternoon/early evening the Celtic Piping Club will host a soiree at a local venue, open to the public. This soiree is a casual pre-dinner affair with drinks, nibbles and piping - what more could you want! Details of the soiree for this year are yet to be confirmed, but we'll let you know the details when available.

The day will conclude with dinner at a local establishment (again, at your own expense), followed by social piping back at our accommodation.

Sunday 18 August

Starting a little later to recover from a big night of playing music, the day will commence at 10 am and conclude with lunch and check-out by 1.00 pm. The AGM will follow.
