Goldfields Piping Weekend 2016

The Celtic Piping Club is proud to host the 4th annual Goldfields Piping Weekend (formerly at Talbot) on 19-21 August 2016.

Held in the old gold mining town of Maryborough, the weekend will provide opportunities to get together with other pipers to play, learn and socialise.

The weekend is ideal for players of, or people interested in, the Scottish smallpipes, uilleann pipes, Northumbrian smallpipes or any other form of Celtic pipes. This includes both mouth-blown and bellows-blown instruments. Partners are also welcome.

The programme will include music and technical workshops, maintenance, demonstrations, meals, socialising and informal playing in a warm and inviting atmosphere.

This year's guest is our very own Matthew Horsley. Matt is a Melbourne-based multi-instrumentalist specialising in the uilleann pipes. In 2014, as the recipient of a JUMP mentoring grant, he travelled to Ireland to study with the renowned piper Mikie Smyth. His debut solo album Australian Waters was released in late 2015. He performs regularly as a soloist and with the bands 'Horsley & Williams Duo' and 'Trioc'. Matt's workshops will include ear learning, historical repertoire for bellows pipes, and regulator tuning and playing.

Friday 19 August

Participants arrive between 4 pm and 8 pm. Please note there is no meal supplied on the Friday night although participants are welcome to use the kitchen to prepare or heat food. Take-away and dining out meals are available locally. Many who have arrived by dinner-time usually head out to a local pub for dinner together.

Friday evening will be an opportunity for pipes maintenance (to make sure they’re in working order for the weekend!) and a night of social piping.

Saturday 20 August

There will be a full day of workshops between 9 am and 4.00 pm.

In the afternoon the Celtic Piping Club usually host a soiree at a local venue, open to the public. This soiree is a casual pre-dinner affair with drinks, nibbles and piping - what more could you want! The soiree for this year is yet to be confirmed, but we'll let you know the details when available.

The day will conclude with dinner at a local establishment, followed by social piping back at our accommodation. Note to pipers - head to our Tunes pages under 'Resources and Links' for some music to common tunes we can share at the sessions.

Sunday 21 August

Starting a little later to recover from a big night of playing music, the day will commence at 10 am and conclude with lunch and check-out by 1.30 pm.

Notice of MeetingThis year we will be holding a Club meeting on the Sunday morning. This meeting is to consider and accept (or reject) the proposal for the Club to become an incorporated association. For further details, refer to the Incorporation Proposal page.
